From 2024 to 2027, the AFRIKAMERA film festival – CURRENT CINEMA FROM AFRICA will focus on diverse, inspiring, groundbreaking and sometimes contradictory perspectives on key social and political issues affecting the present and future of the African continent, with four main themes: BELIEVE * CHANGE * REFLECT and CREATE.
In addition to current productions, the CHANGE edition will focus on films that address common gender roles and their structural and social implications, question existing power relations and established norms, and use the medium of cinema to bring about social change. The focus will be on films by female/female-identified directors.
PROMIS LE CIEL (PROMISED SKY) (Tunisia/France/Qatar 2025) (11 Nov) by Erige Sehiri, which opens the festival as ARSENAL ON LOCATION at City Kino Wedding, deals with the topics of motherhood, independence, self-determination and faith, relating them to the misery of refugees and their struggle for survival – told from a female North African perspective.
MIKOKO (Togo 2025) (14 Nov) by Angela Aquereburu Rabatel reminds us that the fight for women’s rights is not limited to a single day of mobilisation, but must be a permanent struggle.
TIMPI TAMPA Senegal 2024) (15 Nov), the feature film debut of Adama Bineta Sow, questions practices that are harmful to health.
HANAMI by Denise Fernandes (Cape Verde/Switzerland/Portugal 2024) (15 Nov) is an impressive coming-of-age story about love, care and postnatal depression, offering moving insights into the poetry of everyday life and spiritualism in Cape Verde
In MAMBAR PIERRETTE (Cameroon/Belgium 2023) (16 Nov), director Rosine Mbakam takes the audience into the precarious everyday life of seamstress Mambar Pierette in Douala, while at the same time painting an encouraging picture of female empowerment and the strength of community in the face of adversity and socio-economic hardship.
As usual, there are also film highlights to discover that premiered and won awards at major international festivals – this year with a special focus on current films from Nigeria.
As part of the anniversary program for ‘25 Years of Twin Cities Windhoek – Berlin’, AFRIKAMERA presents a comprehensive program entitled SPOTLIGHT ON WINDHOEK (19 Nov) at Sinema Transtopia, following on from the edition CHANGE..
